The film needed to be edgy, and edgy it is. This mix of dark biopic and extreme explicitness makes for a very uneven film. On the one hand you have a Machiavellian, almost Shakespearean, drama being played out, complete with stellar cast - Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud, Helen Mirren. The latter cheapens the film considerably. Dialling down the explicitness could have made this into a great drama.
